Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Are you prepared for the introduction of the Unique Student Identifier (USI)?

Any person undertaking nationally recognised training through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) from 1 January 2015 must obtain a USI before being awarded a qualification or statement of attainment.

The USI is a unique code allocated to each person enrolled in recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) and allows students to access their training records and results (transcript).

A student can apply for a USI via the USI Website. RTOs will either need to create the USI for the student or verify the student has provided the correct USI by checking the Registry. The RTO is not required to apply for the USI on behalf of students but may do so if the student gives permission.

For Australian industry and the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, the USI information means:

  • less time in waiting for job applicants to confirm their nationally recognised training qualifications
  • sharing of training information will be made easier for training providers and for Australian businesses
  • evidence-based smarter regulation to address poor quality training
  • greater efficiency in managing interactions with governments and regulators, simplifying government VET program eligibility and entitlement processing.
