Integrated Rating

An Integrated Rating refers to a Mariner job role that has responsibility for watchkeeping duties on decks. They can also assist engineers with maintenance duties. An Integrated Rating is sometimes known as an Able Seaman/Women, Merchant Mariner or Merchant Sailor.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Steering the vessel under the direction of senior Mariners on board.
  • Assisting in anchoring and mooring operations and securing cargo.

Many Integrated Ratings work on large off-shore vessels that service the gas and oil production industries around Australia. They also work on large international trading vessels. With Australia’s burgeoning offshore oil and gas sector, there is a demand for maritime roles particularly in resource-rich areas of the country.

A career as an Integrated Rating can involve being away at sea for several weeks at a time. It also may involve shift work and performing duties which include working in noisy, dusty, dirty and restricted spaces.

  • Australia’s Maritime sector employs approximately 40,000 people. Almost all (99.9%) of Australia’s international trade is moved by ships, and 25% of domestic freight.
  • The construction of new ports and the expansion of others will lead to more demand for skilled workers.
  • Integrated Ratings must be physically fit, with good manual dexterity and a commitment to safe work practices.
  • Integrated Rating is a skilled occupation that requires international certification through the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Entry Qualifications

A trainee or cadet must be 18 years of age.


  • AMSA Certificates of Proficiency apply to this role dependent on vessel type/size.

Training qualification:

    • Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating)

You must complete at least 36 weeks qualifying sea service on a designated ship and hold a current certificate of medical fitness.
