Changes identified in the Australian transport and logistics sector thanks to innovation and technology

The 2015 Transport and Logistics E-scan highlighted dramatic changes in the Australian transport and logistics industry sectors in the last decade, influenced by the accelerating pace of available technology and the proximity to developing markets. Based on research with TLISC industry and other stakeholders including businesses across all T&L sectors, RTOs and others, it was identified that the transport and logistics workforce is increasingly required to operate complex technology, identify and interpret relevant data in highly technical environments relating to a range of supply chains. Therefore, the demand for higher level qualifications and the growing use of skill sets to address specific needs would be increasingly significant.

An Australian body with a data focused research and digital innovation network, including the transport and logistics sector is Data 61. With the Federal Governments support and renewed focus on innovation, Data 61 will be created combining the expertise of the CSIRO Digital productivity Business Unit & NICTA teams.

At the very least we know there is a lot of technology that now exists and it is a question of when and how it can be applied, recognising that there is great diversity in businesses operating in the sectors.

Throughout 2014-2015, TLISC have attended NICTA events including the Transport & Logistics Living Lab where case studies and research projects undertaken with industry partners in the transport and logistics sectors demonstrate what is possible and investigate potential data driven or digital solutions to real world problems. For example, container tracking, truck wireless communications with an emphasis on safety and intelligent transport systems, big data scenarios relating to ports, transport asset maintenance, congestion, etc. All contribute to our understanding of how relevant data can enhance the performance of a business.
