Maritime Training Package Update

2015 saw the completion of the transition of MAR13 to the Standards for Training Packages, with all units of competency and qualifications included in the MAR Maritime Training Package.

On 27 February 2015 release 2.0 was endorsed and included Skill Sets covering radio operations, fast rescue and offshore familiarisation. Release 2.0 also included the Marine Engineering, Engineer Watchkeeper, Marine Engine Driver (Steam) and Marine Surveying qualifications. These qualifications were reviewed to better address AMSA and STCW requirements and aligned to the Standards for Training Packages.

Release 3.0 was endorsed on 1 September 2015. It included four qualifications and units of competency, aligned to the Standards for Training Packages and revised to better reflect AMSA and STCW requirements, the qualifications include:

  • MAR30415 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Cookery)
  • MAR50315 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Watchkeeper Deck)
  • MAR50415 Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master up to 500 GT)
  • MAR60315 Advanced Diploma of Maritime Operations (Master Unlimited).

Release 3.0 also included the Certificate III in Marina Operations. This qualification is the first for the industry and covers the specific training requirements of marina owners and operators for berthing, mooring, storage and slipway/workshop facilities that are connected to sailing, cruising and general boating.

On 10 November 2015 release 4.0, which includes the remaining qualifications in MAR13, was submitted to the Australian Industry Skills Committee for consideration and endorsement. It is anticipated that these qualifications will be endorsed in early 2016. The qualifications include the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Linesperson) which supersedes the Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Linesperson). This qualification now addresses the full range of skills required by a lines launch person and a shore based linesperson.

Release 4.0 also includes the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating) and the Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Chief Integrated Rating). These qualifications directly align with the competency requirements for certification as described in Marine Orders 70 and 73 (2014) and have been aligned to the Standards for Training Packages and reviewed to better address the job role of Integrated Ratings and Chief Integrated Ratings.

This concludes the transition of all units and qualifications in MAR13 Maritime Training Package to the MAR Maritime Training Package.
