A core function of the Skills Council is to develop and provide high quality industry intelligence and advice to government, Industry and other stakeholders about the profile and skills needs of the current and future transport and logistics workforce. This includes information on skills in demand or shortage, industry workforce demographics and key workforce trends.
Intelligence is gathered through a variety of activities, including:
- Ongoing consultation with industry via face-to-face interviews and the analysis of written submissions
- Targeted surveys – take our survey now
- Analysis of domestic and international data
- The commissioning of research tasks based on an analysis of emerging workforce trends, with the subsequent publishing of research reports
The Skills Council also provides input to a range of industry and government reviews and activities through the provision of submissions and workforce intelligence.
Transport and logistics annual Environmental Scan (E-Scan)
Environmental Scans are produced annually by each Industry Skills Council. The Transport and Logistics Environmental Scan is a key part of the industry intelligence and analysis function undertaken by the Skills Council and each year it identifies the macro and micro factors currently impacting on the skill needs of the workforce and its composition. Importantly, the publication relies on ‘real time’ intelligence gathered through consultation and engagement with industry, including targeted surveys and the analysis of submissions, research and data.

Intelligence gathering – take our survey
The Skills Council gathers ongoing intelligence to ensure our advice is timely and accurate. We have developed three unique surveys and encourage stakeholders to take a few minutes to report on skills in demand, workforce development needs, and training package uptake.
Each survey is now available all year round for our stakeholders to complete. Your input is valuable and is a vital part of our intelligence gathering process.
During the annual E-Scan development phase, each survey is revised and distributed to our stakeholders to ensure a ‘point in time’ analysis of trends and outcomes.

The Skills Council is active in commissioning research that is based on an analysis of emerging workforce trends, often emerging from the annual Environmental Scan. The research is designed to increase intelligence and knowledge of the industry and has produced a number of reports.
