Women Moving Australia Case Studies

Name: Caroline Wilkie

What is your job title?
Chief Executive Officer

Which company/organisation do you work for?
Australian Airports Association (AAA)

Job description (in 25 words or less!):
My role is to lead the industry Association to deliver positive outcomes for those on the ground running airports.

What studies have you undertaken?
My studies early on focussed on law, public affairs and policy but as I have moved through my career has expanded to governance, financial management and leadership studies.

Tell us about your experience in the transport & logistics industry.
I have worked in the sector for most of my career, firstly in media relations at Impulse Airlines (unfortunately a short lived role) and then for 13 years in Associations that support the sector including with the Tourism and Transport Forum and now almost five years with the AAA.

Which other industries have you worked in?
I worked for an Association in the financial services sector. It certainly wasn’t as inspiring as the aviation sector!

What is the best career advice you have received?
You can’t do everything right away, pace yourself.

Best advice to give?
You can’t know how to get somewhere if you don’t set yourself a goal

It’s a bad day when:
I’ve been travelling too much

It’s a good day when:
We get a win on an advocacy issue. My favourite time of the year is also National Conference when all of our hard work over the previous year comes together and we all get to catch up as an industry. The airport sector is a group of fantastic people.

What direction do you see yourself heading in the future?
I love my job and hope the Board keep me on for some time to come, but in the future I would expect to either stay in the aviation sector or lead a new Association in a different sector.

Who are your role models?
I have too many to mention from my Board over the years and those in Senior roles in the industry but if there was someone I would like to follow in the footsteps of it would be Angela Gittins, Director General of Airports Council International. On a personal level my Dad was a wonderful businessman in his field so I try to aspire to be like him.

When you have 30 minutes of free-time, what do you do?
Grab a magazine or book.

Sunrise or sunset?
Sunset.
